RFile

Speed-first. Rust-powered. Free for Windows.

File Explorer, rebuilt. Built for fast browsing.

Move through big folders. Switch tabs. Keep working. RFile is a Rust-powered file manager built around responsive browsing—with powerful previews, file tools, and connected PCs in the same workspace.

  • Browse local drives with tabs, split view, search, bookmarks, and a contextual Inspector.
  • Choose Robocopy, Velocity Rust or Windows Native for file operations. All three preferences are available; job eligibility and safe fallback still apply.
  • Use batch rename, automatic cached folder sizes, in-pane text editing and expanded image, HTML/PDF, CSV and JSON previews. Tags, smart folders, indexed search, Storage Map and duplicate review are Preview.
  • Use Google Drive during its limited rollout and preview trusted access to other RFile computers.
  • In a historical July 2026 engine-only test on 40,373 files, direct Robocopy /MT:16 completed in 66.210 seconds versus Windows Shell IFileOperation at 215.166 seconds: 69.2% less time. This is not a current app UI or LAN benchmark.
  • Compare 28 documented workflows in RFile, File Explorer, File Pilot, Files, and Directory Opus. Browse the same sourced checklist at /compare; no five-app speed ranking has been measured.
  • A 1 Gbps network link has a raw ceiling of 125 MB/s; 2.5 Gbps, 312.5 MB/s; 5 Gbps, 625 MB/s; 10 Gbps, 1,250 MB/s. These are mathematical limits before overhead, not measured RFile speeds.

Speed is the starting point.

Render the rows you need

The file list uses virtualization: visible rows plus a small buffer are rendered as you scroll, instead of building a screen element for every file. How it works

Keep expensive work in the background

Rust handles core file operations. Folder-size calculations run in bounded background workers, reuse cached totals and refresh affected visible folders after changes. How it works

Keep your place in the work

Reorder or detach tabs, use two independent panes, and return to your selection with Back. Preview a file beside the list without opening another app. How it works
