FIND AND MOVE
Stay oriented as you move through storage.

Each file tab owns its current location and history. The sidebar provides durable entry points, while breadcrumbs, navigation buttons, and search keep work inside the active view.
Search and selection
In a local folder, the toolbar search recursively scans that folder and its subfolders after you press Enter. Results stream into the view while the bounded scan is still running; this is different from filtering only the items already loaded.
This PC search opens Search files in Search & storage and its opt-in metadata index, with results as you type after the index is built. Home, Network, Recycle Bin, and Google Drive instead filter items already loaded in the current view. See the Search guide for matching rules, visual and typed filters, and limits.
Keyboard selection, range selection, and select-all are supported in the desktop list. Actions operate on the active selection, so confirm the highlighted rows before a move, delete, or transfer.
Views, sorting, and persistent workspace state
- Details
Show files in a column-based list with available metadata such as name, type, modified date, and size.
- Folder sizes
From 0.3.75, local folders in the Details Size column are measured automatically in the background. An ellipsis means queued or calculating; ≥ marks a partial lower bound, and an unavailable dash has an explanatory tooltip. Completed results are shared across panes and reused by Inspector. Size sorting uses measured folder totals; scrolling exposes more folders for calculation. Totals are logical contents sizes, include hidden files and count hard-linked names separately, not physical allocated or reclaimable space. Network drives, junctions, symbolic links and cloud placeholders are not automatically scanned. A scan stops at 45 seconds, 5 million entries or 128 levels and labels incomplete totals. Results are cached in memory, rechecked on revisits after 30 seconds, and updated automatically for visible local folders after nested filesystem changes. Changed folders and their ancestors recalculate while old totals remain visible; unrelated siblings stay cached. RFile watches at most eight visible parent trees per window. This is a bounded background rescan, not an instant byte-delta counter or persistent disk database. For a manual recalculation, press F5. Settings > General > Show folder sizes in Details turns automatic sizing off. The two-worker background scan yields to explicit Inspector calculations and does not block folder rename/delete.
- List
Use a compact name-focused list when columns are not needed.
- Icon grids
Choose extra-large, large, medium, or small icon layouts. Supported items can display thumbnails. RFile uses Windows Shell item icons; executable, shortcut, screen-saver, and Control Panel icons are kept per file so embedded or target-specific artwork remains correct in both the file surface and Inspector.
- Sort
Sort the active folder by the metadata choices exposed by the current view.
- Selection mode
Use row selection and the available selection controls for multi-item operations.
- Per-folder state
RFile stores view and sorting choices with folder state where supported, and restores the tab workspace from the saved session when the application reopens.
Storage map and exact duplicate finder
Open Search & storage in the sidebar. Search files and Storage map share one dashboard, with Duplicate finder on the right (below on narrow panes). Choose an analysis folder or drive with Browse, select Storage + duplicates or Quick size scan, and press Analyze folder. Scans are cancellable and do not change files.
Storage map shows Where the space goes and the largest files or folders. Scan folder drills into a selected scope; Previous scope returns to the earlier one. Storage + duplicates builds both views from the same metadata inventory, rather than repeating the walk. Inventory does not read file contents or prove content readability; duplicate hashing establishes readability when it opens and reads eligible files. The map excludes empty folders and files whose metadata could not be inspected; hard-linked paths can contribute to logical totals. Quick size scan reads metadata only. Counts are logical sizes, not allocated disk space or a prediction of free space. Read skipped-item and partial-result warnings.
- Review duplicate groups
Duplicate finder groups eligible files only after full-content verification. Select individual copies deliberately; at least one copy must remain in each group. Similar names or sizes alone are not proof of duplication.
- Choose a review folder
Use Review move to folder and choose an existing local destination. RFile shows the exact paths it proposes to move and the copies it will retain before enabling Confirm move.
- Confirm and recheck
Only the approved copies are eligible to move. File identity and content are checked again; changed or conflicting files are skipped, and existing destinations are not overwritten. Start a fresh scan after the move.
Display options and storage overview
- Browse inside RFile
Folder Browse and Choose folder actions open a temporary picker on the opposite side of RFile. It uses the same Windows shell icons, quick-place symbols, Details rows, density and drive-capacity bars as the main folder and This PC views. Navigate with breadcrumbs or double-click a folder; Ctrl+L edits the drive or UNC address. Enter opens the selected folder and Backspace returns with its selection preserved. Escape closes address editing first, then cancels the picker. Choose Use this folder to confirm, or Cancel. Your existing tabs and split layout are preserved. This also covers Google Drive folder download destinations; explicit file pickers and Reveal in Explorer remain separate actions.
- Consistent menus
Settings, sharing permissions, search filters, archive extraction, batch rename and model animation use the same themed dropdown controls, with arrow-key navigation, type-ahead and Escape to dismiss.
- Hidden files
Use Ctrl+H or the Settings option to show or hide hidden entries. Visibility does not change access permissions or filesystem attributes.
- File extensions
Choose whether filenames include their extensions from Settings.
- Inspector
Use Space or the Inspector control to show or hide the contextual details and preview pane.
- Drive usage
This PC shows local and connected cloud storage with used, free, total, and visual usage information when the provider reports it.
- Appearance
Choose Light, System, or Dark appearance in Settings.
